The Queens New York History

Queens may be the most underrated borough in New York City. Many people only think of airports when they think of Queens. However, Queens has a great culture and a very interesting history. Keep reading to learn a little more about how the biggest borough was founded.

Queens New York History begins when it was first settled by the Dutch. They left the Netherlands in Europe to create a new colony known as New Netherlands. The English soon took control of the entire area and named it Yorkshire. Queens would remain under British control until after the American Revolution.

Queens officially became a borough of New York City in 1897. The Queens borough took in Newtown, Flushing, Jamaica, part of the Town of Hempstead, and Rockaway Peninsula. All of the governments in these towns were officially dissolved, creating one central government.

Queens became very popular after the Long Island railway opened. With a ride of a train you could easily hop on to the New York City subway system.

Queens has had an important role in history. It hosted a World’s Fair in 1939 and again in 1964.

While Queens may not be a trendy or hip as Brooklyn, or as chic and glamourous as New York City, it definitely has many great attractions and is a great place to visit or live.
