Periodontal Maintenance for Healthy Gums and a Happy Soul
Losing your beautiful smile isn’t the only reason to seek gum disease treatment and preventive maintenance. Your mouth is a mirror to the rest of your body. When the bacteria that cause gum disease are left untreated, you increase your risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. That’s why gum disease treatment and prevention should be a top priority for you. It’s certainly a top priority for us. Dr. Gerry Curatola, Rejuvenation Dentist, offers periodontal maintenance to promote health and wellness and prevent re-infection.
Periodontal maintenance visits are essentially deep cleanings that keep your mouth fresh and healthy. Scheduled every three to four months, the visits allow us to clean your teeth below the gum line, at the root surface. Dr. Curatola can also monitor the oral environment for any changes that may indicate a reoccurrence.
How Does Periodontal Maintenance Make A Difference For You?
The bacteria that cause periodontal disease are always present in your mouth. Chronic infection begins when the bacterial population is not managed or cleared away on a regular basis through brushing and flossing. Gum disease treatments initially remove problematic bacteria overgrowth and infected tissue, but new bacteria will grow. Continual maintenance is critical to your oral health.
Preventative Gum Disease Treatments
If Dr. Curatola sees any cause for concern during your checkups, preventative gum disease treatments, such as scaling and root planing, can be scheduled. Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical procedure that removes harmful bacteria from the periodontal pockets and tooth roots while also encouraging the reattachment of gum tissue to the tooth surface.
